Description of Work
The Housing Facilities team is seeking an experienced Mechanic III – Plumber/Custodial Equipment Repair, to join our team.

As the Mechanic III- Plumber/Custodial Equipment Repair, you will:

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair custodial equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, and carpet extractors, to ensure safe operation.
  • Train staff on proper equipment use, safety procedures, and basic preventive maintenance.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, replace, and install mechanical systems, including HVAC, piping, fire protection, temperature controls, control valves, and dining equipment.
  • Maintain and repair plumbing systems, including water heaters, water softeners, heat exchangers, water supply, recirculating, drain, vent, and sewer lines.
  • Diagnose, repair, replace, and install food service equipment.
  • Repair and install building hardware and appliances, including electronic door locks, door operators, doors, windows, refrigerators, stoves, washers, and dryers.
  • Respond to emergency and after-hours maintenance calls as needed.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of experience repairing commercial appliances and/or custodial equipment
  • Working knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and testing instruments
  • Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Customer-service orientation when interacting with faculty, staff, and students
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions and safety procedures
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or equivalent education/experience, relevant coursework, or specialized training beyond high school; equivalent experience considered
  • Experience repairing commercial appliances and/or custodial equipment
  • Experience in plumbing system and water softener repair
  • Technical or vocational training in appliance repair, electrical systems, or mechanical maintenance
  • Experience in a university, healthcare, hospitality, or large institutional setting
  • EPA certification for refrigerant handling (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
