Description of Work
The Security Manager is responsible for managing protective services and security operations at Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). The person in this position is charged with ensuring the safety and security of the museum’s staff, visitors, volunteers, and works of art included in the museum’s collection and exhibitions. They develop and implement security and safety policies that align with best practices in the art museum field and contributes to an inclusive and welcoming environment for all museum staff, volunteers, students, and visitors. The Security Manager serves as liaison to UNL’s University Police Department and the museum’s contracted security firm and is the first point of contact for security and building alarms on all Sheldon Museum of Art properties 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, liberal arts, humanities, business, facility management or related field plus three years project coordination or security operations experience; equivalent education/experience considered.
  • Ability to recruit and develop staff, delegate effectively, and maximize the contributions of directly reporting positions while holding each accountable to institutional and performance goals.
  • Knowledge of current museum security practices articulated by the American Alliance of Museums, the Association of Art Museum Directors, the Museum Association Security Committee, the International Committee for Museum Security, and other professional organizations.
  • Strong leadership, decision making, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills; solid presentation, negotiation, problem solving, conflict resolution, and meeting management skills.
  • Ability to develop and monitor annual operating and multi-year project budgets.
  • Must be proficient in computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and databases.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with security systems preferred
