Description of Work
The Housing Facilities Maintenance team is looking for an Equipment Maintenance Technician to join their team.

As an Equipment Maintenance Technician, you will:

  • Diagnoses, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial and residential appliances, including but not limited to: washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, freezers, ovens, and microwaves
  • Perform routine inspections and maintenance on custodial equipment, including but not limited to: vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers and carpet extractors, to ensure they are in good, safe, working condition.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electrical issues and perform repairs, replacing parts as necessary while minimizing downtime.
  • Maintain and enhance the preventive maintenance program to extend the lifespan of equipment and reduce the likelihood of breakdowns.
  • Train staff on the proper use, safety, and basic maintenance of equipment to prevent misuse and damage.
  • Utilize schematics, testing devices, and manuals for effective equipment repair.
  • Order, install, and replace parts and components; maintain inventory of tools and commonly used parts.
  • Liaise with equipment manufacturers and vendors for technical support, warranty claims, part availability, cost negotiations, delivery schedules and procure replacement parts as needed.
  • Maintain accurate electronic records of maintenance schedules, repairs, and replacements for all equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations related to equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Coordinate with leaders and supervisors to ensure equipment availability aligns with cleaning schedules and requirements.
  • Keep the workspace organized and safe and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Stay updated on the latest advancements, assess and test new equipment, and recommend upgrades or replacements to improve operational efficiency.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of experience repairing commercial appliances and/or custodial equipment
  • Working knowledge of electrical/mechanical systems
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and testing instruments.
  • Ability to operate personal computers with proficiency and learn new applications and systems.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Customer-service orientation when interacting with faculty, staff, and students
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions and safety procedures
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and meet University driver eligibility requirements
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s or equivalent education/experience, relevant coursework, or specialized training beyond high school; equivalent experience considered
  • 4 years of experience repairing commercial appliances and/or custodial equipment
  • Technical or vocational training in appliance repair, electrical systems, or mechanical maintenance
  • Experience in a university, healthcare, hospitality, or large institutional setting
  • EPA certification for refrigerant handling (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS)
