Description of Work
The Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln is advancing cutting-edge, high-throughput plant phenotyping technologies that integrate imaging and remote sensing to connect plant traits with genomic expression. This work drives innovations in crop productivity, resource efficiency, stress resilience, and bioenergy development.

As a Plant Phenotyping Technologist, you will:
  • Be responsible for assisting the phenotyping managers and NIC Greenhouse Manager with day to day operations of the multiple phenotyping platforms.
  • Perform program imaging and watering jobs for the phenotyping systems.
  • Design research projects, collect data and ground truth measurements, and analyze and report on the results.
  • Create research protocols and experimental designs to support faculty and/or client research greenhouse and phenotyping projects.
  • Interpret research results and draft papers and project summaries.
  • Water plants, prepare media, clean phenotyping equipment and supplies.
Weekend and holiday hours required with a flexible weekday schedule.
Within the UNL system, this position is categorized as a Research Technologist I.

Minimum Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, engineering, or related discipline plus two years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of seed planting, watering, and plant care helpful.
  • Data collection, analysis, and report writing skills.
  • Ability to apply cutting-edge phenotyping science to manage and supervise projects.
  • Ability to collect ground truth measurements as well as phenotyping data.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are preferred, but not required:
  • Three years of experience in image-based plant phenotyping operations.
  • Mechanical aptitude, computational aptitude, analytical propensity, and scientific paper writing skills.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to make evaluations and decisions in a timely manner.
  • Training in occupational safety.
