The County Engineering Department is seeking a skilled Automotive Mechanic to maintain and repair County vehicles and equipment. This position involves diagnostics, preventive maintenance, repairs, and emergency service work while ensuring safety, efficiency, and professionalism.
This role performs skilled mechanical work on a diverse range of automotive equipment, including both conventional and specialized machinery. Responsibilities include complex maintenance and repairs, such as major overhauls of engines, transmissions, and multi-speed differentials. Work is performed under general supervision, with progress reviewed during and upon completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose equipment failures and perform repairs, overhauls, and preventative maintenance
- Maintain and operate shop tools and equipment safely and accurately
- Record repair data in RTA Fleet Management, including repair orders and consumables used
- Order necessary parts and coordinate with parts personnel to ensure proper repairs
- Perform service calls, tire repairs, and emergency vehicle recoveries
- Maintain shop cleanliness and professional appearance
- Attend work during emergency events such as snow removal or flooding
- Provide positive and professional customer service
- Train and assist other personnel as needed
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, including proper use of PPE
- Maintain accurate records of vehicle fuels, lubricants, and daily time sheets
Minimum Qualifications/Necessary Special Requirements:
Graduation from high school plus two years of experience in light, medium and/or heavy automotive maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the desirable knowledge, abilities and skills.NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured by the County’s insurance carrier.
Possession of certification in Motor Vehicle Refrigerant Servicing as specified in EPA Section 609 guidelines or the ability to obtain certification within 6 months of appointment.
