The County Engineering Department is seeking a skilled and motivated professional to perform responsible technical work in support of engineering, surveying, and construction activities. This position involves a variety of technical duties which may include computer-aided drafting, surveying, construction inspection, right-of-way work, and review of engineering plans and surveys for accuracy and design function. Work is performed under general supervision, with regular exercise of independent judgment in day-to-day responsibilities.

The Construction Inspector III serves as the lead inspector for Lancaster County Engineering construction and public infrastructure projects. This position ensures projects are completed according to approved plans, specifications, County standards, and applicable Federal and State regulations. Responsibilities include performing advanced inspection, surveying, and documentation; coordinating with engineers, contractors, and staff; providing technical guidance and training to other inspectors; and acting as a professional point of contact with the public. The role demands a high level of professionalism, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

  • Monitor contractor activities to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications
  • Review, revise, and interpret construction plans and surveys
  • Serve as a liaison between contractors, County staff, and the public
  • Perform quality control testing during construction projects
  • Conduct surveying, drafting, and field work, including preparation of field books and legal descriptions
  • Inspect culverts and bridges in accordance with federal requirements
  • Prepare right-of-way plans, plats, and appraisal sketches
  • Train and support subordinate technical staff
  • Provide engineering-related information to County officials and the public

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of land surveying principles and engineering construction practices

  • Knowledge of drafting, mapping, and computer software applications

  • Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, legal descriptions, and specifications

  • Ability to perform engineering computations and prepare clear reports

  • Skill in operating surveying, inspection, and testing equipment

  • Ability to work outdoors in varied terrain and weather conditions

  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively with others

  • Commitment to safety and maintaining a professional work environment

Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent supplemented by coursework in Engineering Technology or similar field plus at 2 years of experience as an Engineering Technician, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

Necessary Special Requirement: Possession of a valid driver's license.

HOURS: Full Time; M-F 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (may vary depending on project)
